SPOTLIGHT ON THE SONG: YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW with Artist Mara Levine The right words speak volumes. The right words set to music have the power to change lives. The right song evokes emotions and actions. A great song is one that will transcend time and generation. Every artist looks for those special songs that will impact the listeners beyond just the toe-tapping tune. Folk and bluegrass artist Mara Levine, who recently joined Bell Buckle Records, found such a song in her newest radio release, “You Reap What You Sow,” written by Susan Shann. click the link to read the full article
Mara Levinetag:maralevine.com,2005:Post/55016962020-10-27T03:41:44-04:002020-10-27T03:41:44-04:00Michael Smith, writer of "The Dutchman" and other songs
Thank you for letting me hear your lovely recording [of The Dutchman], which I enjoyed immensely.
The word “facets” implies a gem or crystal with different surfaces where light is transformed showing the viewer what lies beneath the surface, often uncovering new images. Mara Levine’s most recent album is aptly named as she shines a variety of acoustic roots music through her own lens, creating a wonderful array of sounds. The album opens with “You Reap What You Sow”, written by Susan Shann, which is powered along by an all-star team of bluegrass players including Greg Blake, Bob Harris, Rob Ickes, Andy Leftwich, Mollie O’Brien, Mark Schatz and Scott Vestal. One might be tempted to try to identify the sounds as Folk or Americana but that would miss the point. There’s a unifying element of acoustic instrumentation and stellar vocals to be sure, but as genres like Folk, Bluegrass or Americana continue to grow and diversify and boundaries become more blurred perhaps this will be an album that helps tear down artificial walls that try to keep the genres apart.

Any listener who comes to this album with a Bluegrass background will recognize not only many of the players but songwriters like Si Kahn and Bill Staines not to mention wonderful harmonies that lift the songs to someplace special.

I appreciate this album not only as a beautiful recording and tasteful selection of songs which it clearly is but also as a chance to consider how we categorize music. Back in the days of record stores I would buy albums from all the different sections and often found there were records that could easily be placed in Folk, Country, Bluegrass, Singer-Songwriter, Pop, etc. This album is an excellently crafted blend of acoustic instrumentation with stunning vocals that will be cherished by anyone who wants to stop for a moment to listen. - Kevin Slick, President, Colorado Bluegrass Music Society
Mara Levinetag:maralevine.com,2005:Post/64562532020-10-15T10:44:33-04:002020-10-15T10:44:52-04:00On Mara Levine and Terry Kitchen - By Rob Lincoln--PASA Houseconcerts
On Mara Levine and Terry Kitchen

"The combination of Mara Levine and Terry Kitchen is a powerful one. Not only is it always a pleasure to hear two very good singers together, but Mara and Terry's harmonies are truly exceptional and even produce the occasional goose bumps that you only experience when something very special is happening musically. This could not occur, of course, without the wonderful musicality of Terry's guitar and his songs which touch on the universal themes of life in a very personal and compelling way. Mara's singing, which listeners of folks radio should all be familiar with from her well received recordings, is always flawless as is the material she chooses. I highly recommend anyone who has a opportunity to book these two together to do so."

Mara Levine is a New Jersey-based singer and jewelry creator who has a clear, powerful voice that stands out ahead of the music on this, her third project. She’s joined by a host of artists (primarily her friends in the trio Gathering Time), which includes Stuart Markus, Gerry McKeveny, and Hillary Foxsong. She’s also assisted by well-known musicians Andy Leftwich, Mark Schatz, Mollie O’Brien, Caroline Cutroneo, John Guth, Bob Harris, and many others.

Songs selections are by popular songwriters including Susan Shann (“You Reap What You Sow”), Gordon Lightfoot (“Bitter Green”), Si Kahn (“Upstream”), Leonard Cohen (“Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye”), Bill Staines (“Child Of Mine”), and Paul Simon (“Song For The Asking”). Other tunes include “Sea Of Life,” “Daughters And Sons,” “A Perfect Rose,” and the traditional “Taladh Chriosda.” Her choice of songs was intentional, as she states, “I was inspired by the current political and social challenges facing us today.” She included several socially conscience tunes as well as songs about being a better person and about how we treat each other.

The song arrangements, harmonies, and presentation allow Levine’s beautiful voice to be heard and allow the songs themselves to tell the stories. (www.maralevine.com) Bill Foster - Bluegrass Unlimited 4/1/2020

Christine Lavin called Mara Levine, “one of the best singers of her generation,” and David Amram called the international touring artist and jewelry designer a “Golden Voice.” Mara considers herself to be a song interpreter, and is considered by many to be an exceptional song-finder. Rather than penning original songs, Mara picks songs that she loves, but invisions them sounding a bit different than their original form. She then creates beautiful new interpretations of those songs.

As a child in the 60’s, Mara said her parents often listened to folk and classical music.. “In particular, we listened to a radio show every Sunday afternoon called Woody’s Children. My father taped this program every week, so we had a whole catalog of that music to listen to, and re-listen to. The music you listen to as a child, I think, somehow imprints itself on your psyche.” In her early 20’s she joined a Barber Shop troupe where she learned harmony, but she says, “I was always drawn to, and always felt compelled to sing folk music.”

Although Mara has predominately been a folk musician, her work and exposure as a volunteer at the IBMA week in Raleigh has inspired her to soon embark on a new project featuring bluegrass styling in her song interpretations. In 2013, on her previous CD, Jewels And Harmony, Mara featured a bluegrass track including the musicians from the band, Jeff Scroggins and Colorado.

Her latest CD, Facets Of Folk, features a number of folk styled songs of social conscience with themes of taking a stand, making a difference, and considering the treatment of others. However the opening track, “You Reap What You Sow,” written by Susan Shann, featured bluegrass artists Greg Blake, Bob Harris, Rob Ickes, Andy Leftwich, Mollie O’Brien, Mark Schatz and Scott Vestal. That song hit #1 on the Folk DJ chart, and spent 22 weeks on Bluegrass Today’s Grassicana chart.

On her third album, Levine marks her territory as the new standard bearer for folk music with this classically framed set that finds her interpreting worthy modern classics, protest music and some of the sweetest vocalizing you'll find this side of the golden sounds of the 60s. A flat out winner throughout, this isn't about lo-fi, nostalgia or what ever---it's a delightful slice of the here and now hitting the nail right on the head. Well done.
Since the advent of the singer/songwriter there are so many new songs constantly coming at us and apart from the truly great and the traditional, a lot of terrific songs never get shared or really appreciated as it seems most folk musicians are pre-occupied with doing only their own material.

Mara Levine was an unknown entity to me until this, her third release, fell into my hands courtesy of our esteemed editor Mr. Campbell. Doing some research it seems she is New Jersey based and is known as a jewelry designer, and according to the header on her website an "interpreter of fine and contemporary folk songs"

This collection of 13 "fine and contemporary " folk songs from the likes of Paul Simon, Tommy Sands, Gordon Lightfoot, Bill Staines and Si Kahn is delivered most admirably. Ms. Levine has a wonderful voice which she uses with heart and aplomb, delivering excellent renditions of her extremely well-chosen songs, some well known, some not so much. She takes few liberties or flights of fancy, delivering very straightforward, respectful and comfortable of folk renditions of such songs as "Bitter Green" and "A song For the Asking" Her version of Christine Lavin's "The Moment Slipped Away" is as fine a song as I have ever heard and have now experienced it thanks to Ms. Levine's fine choices on her excellent playlist called Facets of Folk. The world needs more such interpreters of fine and contemporary folk songs.

My son and many nieces and nephews were there, with friends in tow, all congregated in the large kitchen eating leftovers and conversing at full volume. I was in another room playing my banjo, when a young girl in her teens came in, sat down, and started watching me play. She was an extra – a friend that had been dragged along – and when she went back in to the kitchen, I heard her say, “I have got to learn to play the banjo. All the cool kids are doing it!”

Just so.

In this time of musical mixing, we see bluegrass artists reaching into the Americana world where they hope to find a larger audience, and performers from outside our realm reaching in for some grassy goodness. Many’s the folk, country, or pop singer who has decided that their career wasn’t complete without a bluegrass record, a sentiment we heartily endorse. Everybody into the pool – the water’s fine!

The latest we have seen is successful folk artist Mara Levine, who has felt called to the bluegrass tradition for her upcoming Facets of Folk album, due early in 2018. A debut single, You Reap What You Sow, has just been released to radio. Mara says that soon as she heard the song, which she found within a pair of CDs she received from songwriter Sue Shann, she knew that she wanted to record it, and that it needed a bluegrass treatment.

So she set out to find the best musicians to suit the song, and ended up recording it with a batch of Nashville super pickers. Scott Vestal is on banjo, with Rob Ickes on reso-guitar, Andy Leftwich on mandolin, Mark Schatz on bass, and Bob Harris on guitar. To help with vocal harmonies, she enlisted Mollie O’Brien and Greg Blake, and the result is a lovely arrangement with Mara’s clear, folk-style voice atop a bluegrass place setting.

When we spoke not long ago, Levine admitted that the bluegrass world was new to her, and that she was a bit apprehensive initially about approaching it, but that everyone had been welcoming and helpful, and she was now eager to gauge the reaction to the single.

“I loved the melody, especially on the bridge. I love to invite audience participation and the chorus was catchy, singable and the entire song resonated with me as a positive message about doing your best at whatever you do and reaping the rewards or fruits of your labors. One could also interpret the song to mean caring for others and nurturing relationships, in particular, keeping your word and your commitments and that this will be returned to you in kind.”
Mara Levinetag:maralevine.com,2005:Post/55016842017-10-18T10:05:00-04:002018-11-06T10:07:12-05:00Jill Padua, Riverfolk Concerts
While Mara Levine doesn’t sing original songs, it truly doesn’t matter. Mara is a performer who should not be missed, and she would be a treat for the entire family, no matter what their musical preferences are" - Frank Moccaldi, booking agent-The Good Coffeehouse (Brooklyn, NY)
Mara Levinetag:maralevine.com,2005:Post/55016932013-11-29T10:15:00-05:002018-11-06T10:11:17-05:00Sol Zeller, president-Borderline Folk Club (Rockland County, New York)
"I was immediately impressed by her vocal talent, warm personality, and the tremendous rapport that she had with the audience. Whether doing a traditional folk song, one that was written by the legendary Si Kahn, or one of more recent vintage by Bob Franke, Pat Wictor or Eric Bogle, Mara gives the song her own unique interpretation much as an artist does when putting paint to canvas." - Sol Zeller, president-Borderline Folk Club (Rockland County, New York)
Mara Levinetag:maralevine.com,2005:Post/55016942013-11-18T10:15:00-05:002018-11-06T10:12:03-05:00Lori Falco, performer liaison -Folk Project (New Jersey)
Mara’s performance at the Folk Project Fall Festival in 2011 drew an enthusiastic response from our audience. She sings with a clear, pure sound that imparts a lovely ethereal tone to her music and her repertoire is studded with some of the most memorable tunes in the folk/rock genre. Whether singing lead vocals or luscious harmonies, Mara's voice draws the audience into an alternate realm." - Lori Falco, performer liaison -Folk Project (New Jersey)
Mara Levinetag:maralevine.com,2005:Post/55016972013-11-08T10:15:00-05:002018-11-06T10:13:25-05:00Dr. Bob, GotFolk.com
"Instead of calling herself a singer, Mara likes to say she is a musical interpreter, and justly so. She readily admits she cannot play an instrument, but when you have as beautiful and resonant a voice as hers, why bother." - Dr. Bob, GotFolk.com
Mara Levinetag:maralevine.com,2005:Post/55016982013-11-06T10:15:00-05:002018-11-06T10:14:06-05:00Robin Romeo, WhereforeArts.com
"Mara Levine has one of the strongest, clearest and most beautiful voices that I have ever heard. I want to describe it as a cross between Joan Baez and Karen Carpenter." - Robin Romeo, WhereforeArts.com
Mara Levine
